UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay focuses on education as she marks her first United Nations General Assembly, on the occasion of the 73rd Session 21 September 2018

Events

Audrey Azoulay will highlight UNESCO’s leadership in promoting inclusive and quality education when she attends her first UN General Assembly in New York as Director General, from 23 to 26 September.

UNESCO has organized two major events:

A call for mobilization on girls’ education – “12 Years to Break Barriers and Leave no girl behind” an initiative organized with Canada, France, the United Kingdom, among others, and in the presence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Canada), President Emmanuel Macron (France) and Prime Minister Theresa May (United Kingdom). It will aim at mobilizing the international community around UNESCO in order to reach SDG 4 in favor of girls’ education and to announce Member States’ new commitments, ahead of the world “Education 2030” meeting, to be hosted by UNESCO next December.

Tuesday 25 September at 4.00pm – United Nations Headquarters – Room 1

A high-level meeting on the power of education in preventing racism and discrimination around the case of antisemitism, in the presence of Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres and Heads of State and Government. UNESCO is committed to the prevention of racism and violent extremism through education. The Organization published a guide on the prevention of violent extremism through education in 2017 and another one on the prevention of antisemitism through education last June.

Wednesday 26 September at 5.00pm – United Nations Headquarters – Room 2

In addition, the Director-General will represent the United Nations Secretary-General at the High-Level Global Business Coalition for Education Breakfast in the presence of representatives of civil society, private sector leaders, and governmental and non-governmental actors.

In the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, the Director-General will take the opportunity to have several of bilateral meetings with Heads of State and Government and Ministers.

Finally, in line with UNESCO’s open policy to civil society, the Director-General will participate in several events outside the United Nations. These include the opening of an event co-organized by BnF (National French Library) and the New York Public Library on the importance of protecting and enhancing documentary heritage in the presence of representatives from academic institutions, such as Columbia and Harvard. She will then attend the Global Business Forum.
